Bastille Day and !!!

July 14, 2010

Happy Bastille Day! Here at Chez T, we do celebrate, because I’ve got some Frenchy running through my veins. The Frenchy could be the reason for my formidable temper, but then again, I’ve also got Irish floating around in my family tree, and they’re supposed to be a tad fiery, too.

But no emotional outbursts or fire-breathing-dragon routines today. Today it’s about finding the !!! in my life.

!!!: This list, devised by Miss D. and approved by Miss M. On this list are foods that Miss M. is going to give a second chance. Or even a first chance, if you are cauliflower stems.  Expanding picky horizons is definitely cause for !!!.

!!!: In addition to running her Detective Agency, Miss D. has decided that she wants to be the next Sophia Coppola. I say, “Why not?” She has energy to spare.

!!!: A cocktail for Bastille Day! This is super-light and refreshing; perfect for our 95 degree weather!

Lillet au Citron

recipe from The Denver Post

serves 2

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

Ice

1 cup white Lillet*

Chilled club soda

Lemon slices for garnish

In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved and slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Cool syrup completely.

Fill 2 glasses with ice. Add 1/2 cup Lillet to each and 1-2 tablespoons of the lemon syrup, or to taste. Top off the drinks with a splash or two of soda and garnish with lemon.

*Lillet is a fortified French white wine, generally served chilled as an apertif. It’s delicious!

!!!: This suitcase is getting ready again–I’ll be gone for a quick weekend trip with my main man. I’ll be back Monday.

1.) The way kids spell words on their own gets me every time. 2.) That drink sounds yummy. Light and yummy. 3.) Have fun on your weekend getaway!

!!! things:
–Spain winning the WC, obviously.
–Getting the urge to write outside of blog posts again
–Finding some fabulous new music online
–Eating way too much Spanish food on account of WC win

That drink looks delicious–I love Lillet! My favorite way is in a Vesper–2 parts gin, 1 part vodka, splash or two of Lillet, shaken to be very cold and served with a lemon twist in a cold glass. Happy travels!

mmm- cauliflower- I love when it is made into a souffle with cheese, or even blended as a coup (with cheese). I’m hungry now.
Glad to see yours are not writing foods off because they think they don’t like them. Thats a pet peeve of mine. People should try something before they say they don’t like it- maybe even a few times.

Well Bastille day is my birthday so today has been a !!! day with some lovely cards and a surprise homecoming this evening from my husband who arrived with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and I honestly cannot remember the last time I got flowers and these are beautiful roses which are my favorite.

Sounds like a wonderful summer drink but I still prefer my glass of chardonnay which I shall be drinking while I skype this evening with my oldest bestest friend who is in Oz – another !!! for the week!

and now I’m singing “Oh my darling, OH my darling, OH MY DARLING Clementine….”

Happy travels jetsetter.

I feel like the misspellings of “berry” must say something about the way Miss D/M pronounce the word. And I find that absolutely fascinating.

Yet again, I find myself wanting children, but for all the wrong reasons.

Here’s my surefire way to have my kids try any food in the world: prepare it for myself. Sit down with a nice book or magazine, ready to enjoy my alone time. Take a fork and prepare to take a big bite. Within moments there will be a child demanding my plate. In restaurants my kids will be eating queso and will start eyeing up my salad! Next time they order the salad! Is that weird.

Now all I have to do is give cauliflower stems another try…

Ok I will celibate any holiday with a cocktail, guess I am off to the liquor store for me. Love Miss D.’s eating action plan! Not sure about cauliflower stems myself.

TKW July 15, 2010 at 6:40 am

Linda–I love your tip on getting kids to try new things! You are a genius.

J. Harker–what? Being able to laugh at their misspellings isn’t a valid reason to have kids? I say it is! Waiting, like jc, for the mango hooch.

Heather–is it wrong that I looked at Miss D.’s spelling of blueberry and thought, “bluebeer?” Oh, so very many miles to go…:)

Happy Bastille Day! For someone who loves cooking as much as you do, I’m sure it can get frustrating when your kids go through the picky, fussy stage. I know I am.

And how do you always manage to make me crave a cocktail so early in the day? Oh right. I’m at work. That’s why. I’m dying for one right now.

And yay to weekend getaways. So happy for you guys. I’m also getting away but not the romantic kind. The babe is tagging along, but it’ll still be nice to be away from the city a bit.

I am thinking your refreshing drink needs a splash of vodka. I had to laugh at my own post. I posted this really great blueberry-lemon iced tea recipe. The drink includes no alcohol and I knew my foodie blogger friends would be saying WTH ( what the heck)…:-)

Hope you enjoyed your weekend. Cheers to your children expanding their food horizons. I am still trying to convince my own son that chicken tenders are not their own food group.
