A Relic: Blueberry Boy Bait

June 20, 2011

You know you’re a special person when I bake for you. I don’t bake for anyone, practically. Hell, I don’t even bake for my husband, and he’s a pretty swell human being.

But our sweet and faithful babysitter, Kate? I will bake for her.

Because let’s face it, a babysitter who never cancels and happily hauls your children around to God-knows-where and brings them home, several hours later, completely exhausted is  pure gold. Babysitter Lotto.

Kate spends most of the year at college, but she returns in the summer, much to our delight. The poor creature always looks a little startled the first time she rings our doorbell in June and we jump and maul and yeowyeowyeow on her like small, excitable dogs. And the most excitable of those dogs? Moi. For sure.

Kate turned (hack, hack, Holy Beejeezus this makes me feel old) twenty this past week, and the girls and I decided that a cake was in order.  Well, in truth, the girls decided that a cake was in order and I took off my curmudgeon undies and retrieved the flour out of the pantry.

I chose this cake for several reasons: a) it’s not too sweet, and Kate is one of those girls who visits the gym on a regular basis; b) it takes seriously only about 20 minutes to throw together and c) we are desperately trying to get Miss M. to eat fruit–any kind of fruit–and I thought that if I put fruit in a cake, we’d have a fighting chance.

Miss M., just like her sister before her, is going through the 5-year old Pickies. The 5-year Pickies blow.  As this goes to press, Miss M. will eat zero fruit. Not even bananas. Same for the dreaded veg, unless it’s fresh sweet corn. A sandwich? Forgeddaboutit. Hamburgers? Ewww.  If it ain’t in nugget form, it’s not passing her lips.

Can you feel the hair standing up on the back of my neck? It’s maddening.

A few things of note about this cake recipe…can you tell that it’s ancient? I mean, who calls something “Boy Bait?”  I grew up eating this cake, so you know it’s been around a while.  I don’t even know where the original recipe came from–my copy is scrawled on an old 9×5 card–but I think it’s a bake-off winner circa 1960-something.

Geezer Town.

But it’s a keeper. This cake is delicious hot or cold–I prefer it room temperature–and it’s good for snacking or a breakfast treat or sliced for someone who happens to think your children are adorable. Even when they’re in the throes of the 5-year old Pickies.

Blueberry Boy Bait

serves 12

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups sugar

2/3 c. chilled butter

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 egg yolks

1 cup milk

1 cup blueberries

2 egg whites, beaten

Sift together the flour and sugar. Cut in the butter (I use a food processor for this) until mixture forms fine crumbs. Set aside 3/4 cup of crumb mixture to use later in the topping for the cake.

To remaining crumb mixture, add baking powder, salt, egg yolks and milk. Beat for about 3 minutes or until well blended.

Whip egg whites until peaks form. Fold into the cake batter.

Pour batter into a greased 9×13-inch pan. Sprinkle blueberries over top. Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture over the blueberries.

Bake in a pre-heated 350-degree oven for about 45 minutes or until golden brown.

ps:  In case you are wondering, Project Consume a Blueberry failed. That minx picked every single berry out of her slice.  The rest of us enjoyed it happily.

pps: If I haven’t visited your site in a while, please accept my apologies. I spent most of last week trying to figure out what to do with Harryboy, who has suddenly decided that the world is his personal latrine. We’re 600 bucks in and after today’s appointment, we still don’t have answers.  He’s in isolation in a bathroom right now, per Vet’s orders, and will be confined until more test results come in. And with that news, I leave you, because every item in the house needs to be steam-cleaned.  I’m a little cranky with felines right now. *hiss*

I think you deserve a Valium Salt Lick hon. Or maybe you can just toss back a shot of tequila with a slice of this dreamy cake.

Thank goodness there is a name for it: the 5-year-old Pickies! See, I was getting worried bc Youngest is all King Picky. But now? Relief…

Congrats on winning Babysitter Lotto!

Ink,

I just wish Babysitter Lotto lasted all year long. :)

King Picky should meet Queen Picky this summer…they could reject all kinds of things together.

Did you see SATC 2? A lousy movie but I was rather amused when Charlotte did not really want to let her hot nanny go because she knows: a great babysitter is harder to find than a great husband. Ha.

Subwow,

That is frighteningly true!

This sounds wonderful. My mom makes a blueberry pound cake that I adore. Baby Girl calls it “Momma’s Favorite Cake that Nana Makes.” And that is pretty much dead on.

What a sweet welcome-back treat for Kate! She is one lucky baby-sitter (and it sounds like y’all are lucky to have such a lovely gal to sit on your little ones & let you have a night out every once in a while).

And I definitely empathize with Miss M’s case of the Pickies. My nephew went through the same thing at that age — and he also insisted he didn’t like sandwiches. Who doesn’t like sandwiches!?! I will never understand… but that’s the mind of a 5yo.

Hang in there, she’ll come around to blueberries one day, and in 10 years you’ll all laugh about it. (Right?)

Meister,

You know what’s nuts? My 9-year old won’t eat a sandwich, either. Or a hamburger. What is wrong with those oddballs?

This reminded me of wandering through the forest as a kid and actually picking wild blueberries. This was camping and our counselor took Bisquick an crafted blueberry muffins which we made over an open fire—one of the best things I’ve ever eaten, and completely forgotten until this moment. I’ll have to try this recipe and conjure up the old along with the new. Good luck with getting everything, from fruit to cat piss, in their proper places.

There’s some kind of flavor magic an open campfire imparts to food, don’t you think?

So sorry to hear about Harry. As for the picky eater and no fruit, how about smoothies? My youngest isn’t a huge fruit fan but he’ll drink down smoothies – add in some good protein powder and I don’t feel guilty at all.

Oh no!! There’s nothing worse than cat pee on your stuff . . . that reminds me of a classic family story from a couple years ago. My aunt has peeing-prone cats, and she brought this iron to my sister’s wedding to help iron all the tablecloths. As the iron heated up, a strange and pungent smell started emanating. What is that?? we all wondered. And then it got worse. My dear, vaporized cat urine is a powerful thing. It’s actually the worse thing I’ve ever smelled. So at least your cat pee isn’t in vapor form! =)
P.S. The boy bait looks fabulous.

I’m with subWOW on this one. (Chuckling over the value of a great babysitter… and those scenes in SATC2.)

It occurs to me, dear Kitch, as I ponder attempting this (9,000 calorie?) recipe, that I don’t understand why you aren’t 250 pounds. And I note also that you don’t put calorie counts on your recipes! Ha!

Not that I’m requesting that you do – mind you. And I could even justify many of them by telling myself “hey! blueberries! brain food!” (exactly what I’ll do, in fact)… but MAN – you make everything sound so tasty – and you’re such a svelte and minxish Momma – how’s that possible???

;)

TKW June 21, 2011 at 3:17 pm

BLW,

I think that in the cake department, this recipe isn’t that bad. No frosting or anything! Not that I would know for certain, because when it comes to indulging, I’m going for the guacamole.

As for staying out of the plus-size department at Macy’s, I attribute it to constant cleaning of cat pee, chasing of minxes, and Laundry Hades. I guess there IS an upside to slavery. ;)

You baked for your babysitter–I think that is brilliant (my new favorite word–I intend to over use ) and so thoughtful–I don’t care how wonderful the babysitter is–you baked! Your swell and brilliant and the cake looks wonderful.

I remove cat urine with vinegar and water–this product can be found in its cheapest form in the Walgreens feminine product aisle. I’m not sure why that product works best but it does. Clean paper towels, blot never ever rub–removes most of and sometimes all of the smell. I hope Harry they get the the root of Harry’s problem and he feels better soon.

Ouch! So sorry about Harryboy. You probably don’t want to know that you’re at the point when we decided it was time to send our first cat Mittens to that great litter box in the sky. The vet agreed.

Blueberries are supposed to help the memory…? I forget. I’d better make this, just in case.

TKW June 21, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Mary Lee,

Just try to send a cat to the great litter box in the sky in Boulder County. It ain’t happening. Doesn’t matter how bad or how old the offender is. They want us to consider kittycat Prozac if they can’t find anything on Thursday. And this was uttered to us in a vet office with a doggy hydra-therapy pool and brochures for kitty acupuncture. God, I love this crazy-ass town.

I only experienced mild pickyness with my girls, and I tried to be patient with them. We know it’s temporary, right?
My middle one hated meat of any kind – not for taste, but because she was lazy to chew! As I was the same when I was a brat, I don’t push her, and parse out a cube of meat on her plate and no more.
Miss M. will come around one fine day – just don’t give up – offer a bit of fruit in teeny, tiny morsels and invite her to try it. Our palates change constantly and all we need is a bit of friendly prodding:)
I love the idea of a blueberry cake, even if it had such a silly name:)

I’m clueless as to what to do about kids who are picky eaters. I think they’d starve in my house, which I appreciate isn’t acceptable practice. In any case, for a ‘fruit cake’ that isn’t too sweet and you can’t pick out the fruit, may I suggest our household favourite?

http://shelleyshouse.blogspot.com/2008/12/what-to-do-with-old-fruit-spice-cake.html

The original recipe calls for 2 cups of pureed zucchini, so if the spiced fruit works, maybe zucchini could be the vegetable of choice? Worth a try anyhow.

Sorry about Harryboy… Hope you get some answers.

Why did no one tell me about the 5 year old pickies??? Eli never had them – the kid eats like a teenager at 6 and has been since he was 6 months! Keegan on the other hand??? The boy finds 50 reasons to leave the table. He picks at his chicken and swears that we’ve never made him eat chicken before, EVER. He still takes the fruit and the veg. Bread??? Never happen. Meat??? Not really of any importance. And watch how close his food gets to onions, mushrooms, cooked spinach… it can’t be eaten if it touches!

But not so old I don’t remember our golden baby sitters. We found some gems. Our best was a farmer’s wife. We called her Nordy. I wouldn’t have made it with 3 under 3 without her. Looking back, I don’t think I did nearly enough nice things for her. Well, maybe I did, I’m just getting so old I probably don’t remember! :)

I hate when people chime in about my pets…but here i go. We have three crazy ones, and one who decided similarly that the floor was the best place (next to any clothes on the floor). We tried a new litter box, new litter, mixing litters, moving litter boxes (that one worked for awhile)…eventually we learned it was stress (like they have anything to be stressed with). once the fourth kitty passed away (whom little miss “i like to pee on your freshly washed jeans” thought was a serial killer from her actions) she went back to normal.

thus, kitty prozac may work, but if not…hide those jeans!
