Guest Post: Miss D.

January 11, 2012

Dear Readers,

On December 15, Miss D. celebrated a birthday. She woke up and announced: “Hey, Mom! I’ve hit the double-digits, baby!”

I was wildly proud and utterly terrified at the same time.  Instead of the usual birthday pictorial, and heck, I’m so late that it’s shameful–I thought I’d share some of her words with you.

My budding writer just finished a personal narrative for school, and her teacher deemed it “awesome.”  I think it’s pretty awesome, too. Her minxy voice comes through, which I love.  I left in the errors, just for grins…gotta love a good [sic].

So without further ado, please welcome Miss D.

**My Favorite Day**

Lights flashing everywhere, lasers flashing, I run to the arcade, ready for battel. The letters read, LAZER TAG!!!

I was at Boondocks with my friend Gregory. We were both 9, active, crazy and ready. We ran to the entrance (a little damp from bumper boats, and hair frizzy because of the go-carts).  Me and Greg waited in line while my sister and brother went to play mini-golf.

“No way. You can’t be serious.”

“Yep.”

Me and Greg just met a girl who said her earings glow in the dark. I think its a lie.

Soon we were in, it was so cool. The girl’s earings did glow in the dark, but that wasn’t all. My skirt shined and spun like a disco ball.

“I’m a living disco ball!”

Then a couple minutes later I noticed that MY TOENAILS GLOWED GREEN!

I was on Greg’s team, known as the “Red Team.”

We entered the dark, scary, heart stopping room. We walked to our base. Then “Booommm!” The objects all around exploded with rainbows of color, the battel was on.

We all ran out of the base but stayed in territory. Red and green lights flashed like deadly lazers. A blast of happiness shot through  me, I was estatice.  There was this one lady I shot over and over again. She was surprised, confused and frustrated.

Soon the lights were off, we went to our base like soldiers.

We looked at our scores. Hello! I came in second place! Greg was in last, he got -96. My score was 978!

Then I walked out proudly into the shining lights.

**In other news, I’m guest posting today over at Bruce’s awesome blog! I’d love it if you’d come say Hi!

Your daughter is the awesomenest biz.

“Then I walked out proudly into the shining lights.”

That pretty much says it all. This put a big smile on my face – thank you and the Fabulous Miss D for sharing.

Dec 15 is one of my fav days (it happens to be husband’s birthday too).
Loved the pizazz of Ms. D’s story. And the line I loved was this: “I am a living disco ball!”
Happy Happy Belated B-D to Ms. D! Keep on writing Ms. D.

Dec 15th is a popular day for birthdays. It’s my mom’s, too. Though Miss D is obviously cooler than my mom, because my mom doesn’t play LAZER TAG! Pretty awesome kid you have there.

Writing simple does not get any better than this, ““I’m a living disco ball!” Smiled all the way through especially when Miss D outscored Greg.

I love her writing—it could be genetic talent, a perfect nature-nurture situation. And Hello! If this doesn’t prove the rise of the feminine, what does? I’m going to hunker down with Greg and hope the girls will be nice to us guys. Super Happy Double-Digit B-Day to Miss D!

How refreshing it is to read this…in the simplest of words Miss D conveys her story and emotion. I hope she can always hold on to that and not let her internal editor convince her that more is more.

So I’m pretty sure “I am a living disco ball!” is going to work its way into my vernacular, because it is awesome. Miss D–you keep on keepin’ on and never stop writing.

Miss D,
It sounds like you could teach Greg a thing or two! Or better yet, next time bet something cool on the game like candy or glow-in-the-dark earrings! Greg would totally owe you a bunch of cool stuff ;)

Happy Birthday!

Awesome score, Miss D and awesome writing, too.

There is nothing more to say. The girl rocks. I just put down my New Yorker (which I love!) and read this, which I love more. Talk about flow! May she never, ever, censor herself or doubt that voice!

It’s true, I *was* confused, surprised, and frustrated when she kept hitting me again and again.

;-)

Love the ‘damp from bumper cars and frizzed from go-carts’ line.

Awesome, indeed.

Holy crap, Kitch!!! That IS frickin amazing. Seriously! I teach 4th grade writing, and it really is sorta my area of expertise (in terms of teaching the kids how, I mean!), and I can seriously tell you that your kid is hyper gifted in this area. She’s got it all..voice, transitions, movement, content, focus, vocabularly….
I am suddenly feeling extra stressed out about our state writing test next month.;)
Happy Birthday to her, and be sure to water that flower…she’s got a natural talent. Help her milk it.

P.S. With your permission, I would like to share her essay with my class next week, as an example. May I?

Liz,

You just made D. light up like a disco ball. Absolutely, share it!

ps: she wrote another piece last week, praising her friend, and she said, “Isabella’s imagination is thick as taffy.”

*jawdropped* Thanks for making our day!

Awesome two-digit daughter!!
And loved your guest post. My MIL used to give us all something called Gaston Beef Stew. (It was in Joy of Cooking) We always added dumplings! But it got better after a day or so and was perfect when you were ill, just had a baby or whatever.
Now me…I usually take a HUGE pound cake which can be sliced and frozen in individual slices. Or custard…depending on age. :)

She is something else for 10! It’s amazing watching them grow into themselves. We inch closer and closer to double digits with every passing day. I love watching the budding artist in Eli and the rocking musician (but NOT dancer) that Keegan is turning into. Thanks for sharing this. It’s a lovely way to smile!
