Hi Readers! I know y’all are just as frantic as I am with this start-of-school nonsense, so I’ll make this brief.
Linking up with Mamakat today to answer the prompt: close your eyes, dig through your photo box, grab a photo and write about it.
I love this prompt. I love it so much that I went through my photo box in my mind, thinking of photos I’d be giddy to write about. I almost cheated, because I have some doozies, all with good stories behind them.
But I didn’t cheat.
For once in my life, I played by the rules.
And I got this:
Now this isn’t a bad photo at all. I mean, how verklempt does Miss D. look in this photo? She’s adorable.
It’s just that the story isn’t all that riveting, but here goes:
What you have here is Miss D.’s first encounter with barefoot feet + grass.
D. was born in December and so she spent most of her time indoors. She also was a late walker–mainly because she learned how to crawl so friggin’ fast that it was more efficient to crawl–so she was probably about 17 months old in this photo.
I’d taken her down to Mama’s the day this picture was taken, which is in and of itself a bit of a story. Miss D. hated the car. The only thing she hated more than the car was her carseat. Because once D. learned how to walk, she never wanted to stop moving. Restraining movement of any kind was met with howling defiance and woe.
Miss D. howled and woe-ed all the way down to Mama’s, and after an hour of that shitty business, I was fork-tender. Done.
Mama poured us glasses of wine and we took a blanket out to the backyard, figuring that poor D. had some fury to work off. It wasn’t until she took that first step onto spring grass, when I saw this look of complete disbelief, wonder and horror all mixed together, that I realized that my little cherub had no idea what grass was.
At least not what grass felt like on bare toes.
Mama and I quickly snapped a few pictures of her, giggling like a couple of nuts. Our laughter only served to fuel Miss D.’s rage. She got pissed. Tantrum-time pissed. How dare we laugh at her? How dare we think this prickly stuff was okay to walk on?
The drive back home was eerily peaceful. Although D. never surrendered to sleep in the car, she did on this day. Too much drama, even for this little diva.
Grass: 1

I, too, was going to do this prompt…and then I got sidetracked…and then I, too, was going to cheat…and then I got sidetracked. I wonder if I’ll get to it or not…
I am not a fan of my bare feet in grass either. Go MissD.!
Precious photo…. love looking at kid photos….. Cute story too.
Such a cutie. Great story!
“Firsts” always provoke the most amusing responses! I enjoyed your story.
The look on Miss D.’s face is priceless – love that you were able to catch it on film. I thought this prompt would be fun, but when I saw the option for one inspired by the word “diapers” I knew I had to finally post the poop story.
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who giggles at my baby’s WTF moments. We just started O. on solids. He did not know what to do with his first mouthful and looked like he would have asked us if he could have.
Her face…priceless!!
Great :)
Her expression reminds me of the time #1 stepped on sand for the first time.
He was horrified and fascinated.
Her WTF face is hysterical.
You know that weird thing that happens when you use an odd word on a particular day and then you see/read/hear it again on the same day? I just mentioned to a friend today that I had recently used the word “verklempt” at work and the lady looked at me like I was crazy. I had to explain what it meant.
My friend and I chuckled.
Now here it is again…
P.S. Is it wrong that I sorta get a kick out of when my kids would get really really pissed because we are laughing at them?
Now see, I think that’s a great story. ;)
I’m glad you didn’t cheat. I like this story because her face is absolutely what the heeeeeeeeeeeeell but waaaaaiiiit.
