Birthday Dog Treats

Howdy, Readers! We had a whirlwind weekend of birthday celebration and plenty of frolicking in the beautiful outdoors. The weather was glorious and Colorado is at its most “show-offy” right now–the trees are audacious bursts of red, orange and yellow. I walked and walked around the neighborhood and just gawked; it seriously took my breath away.

It also caused some mixed feelings on my part, because I could see those leaves starting to fall and I knew that they wouldn’t be this glorious for an entire year. Plus, those colorful, shedding leaves remind me that–not to get all Game of Thrones dramatic on you or anything–winter is coming.

I have good reason to fear winter; it brings out the worst in me and I have to be very, very careful not to fall into bad habits, both in mind and in body. It requires a lot of discipline and faith and just plain pluggin’ through, but I hope to duplicate last winter’s regime so I don’t get eaten. Winter is quite capable of eating me whole.

Speaking of regimes, my husband is beginning yet another one, because we made the decision a few weeks ago to totally give Thanksgiving the finger this year. While everyone else is cooking the grossest meal of the year, the T family will be eating guacamole and shaking our bootay in the warm waters of Cancun, Mexico. And let me tell you, I won’t miss Thanksgiving one little bit. Before the revelry starts, though, there is the “Holy-shit-I-have-to-squeeze-into-a-swimsuit-in-a-month” panic. Thus, Le Regime.

Hubs and I may not be the only ones in need of Le Regime. This weekend, the little, white birthday boy got himself into a bit of mischief in the pantry. I came downstairs on his birthday morning to a huge mess. Boxes and empty wrappers everywhere! That stinker had pillaged the pantry and munched his way through a box of doggy probiotcs and a container of chicken-wrapped rawhide sticks.

He claimed innocence, but that boy can’t act worth a lick:

Seriously, Nic Cage could do a better acting job.

Such bad behavior should have landed Mozz-man in the doghouse (literally!) but hey, it was his birthday, and I’d promised the girls that we’d make him some homemade doggy treats. After I cleaned up the naughty boy’s detritus, the girls and I got down to business.

This recipe is really easy and straightforward, and it uses ingredients you probably already have in your house. The Minxes decided a Halloween theme was in order, so we used little bat and half-moon shaped cookie cutters, and threw in a star for good measure.

The birthday boy was happy to gobble up the results, but he only gets one or two per day. Le Regime, you know.

If you have a canine companion with a birthday coming up (or if you just want to spoil your pooch), these are a perfect way to do that. Just keep them on a high shelf in the pantry!

Homemade Peanut Butter and Bacon Dog Biscuits

recipe courtesy of Sally’s Baking Addiction

1 cup natural peanut butter

3/4 cup nonfat milk

1 egg

1  3/4- 2 cups whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/3 cup quick oats

3 strips cooked bacon, crumbled

Combine peanut butter, milk and egg in a mixing bowl and stir well with a whisk. Transfer mixture to a large mixing bowl. Add in 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour, baking powder and oats. Using the paddle attachment of a stand mixer, mix well. Dough should be very stiff; add up to 1/4 cup more flour if mixture is too soft. Stir in crumbled bacon. Chill dough for half an hour.

Roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired shapes and sizes. Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for 18-20 minutes. Cool and store in an airtight container.
